Antibiotics in food

The initiative for the research followed an article published in TODAY newspaper in 2016 which highlighted the concern amongst health officials over the spread of resistance to last resort antibiotic and the scientists renewed call for ban on the use of antibiotics in agriculture. Additionally, the theme for the World Consumer Rights Day 2016 was in relation to consumer concern over the overuse of antibiotics and a call was made to take “antibiotics off the menu”.

Based on the findings it was evident that local and international bodies understand the dangers associated with the widespread practice of routinely dosing farm animals with antibiotics leading to growing development of human resistance to antibiotics in all parts of the world thus it was agreed that there should be continued efforts in raising awareness amongst consumers regarding the use of antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance.
