The competition department’s function in accordance with the mandate of the Fair Trading Commission (FTC) under Section 4 (3) (a) of the Fair Trading Commission Act, 2009 (FTCA 2009) and the Fair Competition Act, 2009 (FCA 2009) is to keep under review commercial activities to ensure that practices that may unfairly or adversely affect the interest of consumers and businesses are prevented or terminated.
The Commission’s Competition Department aims to promote fair business practices. It also Investigates competition cases for which any restrictive business practices being those of an abuse of dominance or anticompetitive agreement nature arises. It also assesses mergers and acquisitions to ensure that they do not amount to any unilateral or coordinated effects in the market. The department further carries out public awareness through social media on how competition could be beneficial to all in the market.
